Now, we play the future! CheongJu Philharmonic Orchestra. CheongJu Philharmonic Orchestra
  • First formed as the Cheongju Orchestra in 1973, the CheongJu Philharmonic Orchestra has lived up to its potential as the birthplace of culture and arts by emerging early on to contribute immensely to the development of art in not just Chungcheongbuk-do but the entire Chungcheong region as a whole. The orchestra stands tall, maintaining its pride in its artistic and cultural level as well as the high quality of its music. Each and every member of the orchestra possesses a gift for music that mixes together to create a beautiful harmony that brings comfort and life to the people of Cheongju. As such, the orchestra has now claimed its rightful position as the forbearer of artistic and cultural development in our region. Furthermore, by holding dozens of performances annually, the orchestra seeks to introduce countless visitors to various genres of music and close the gaps between it and the people of Cheongju. Thanks to these efforts, the orchestra is steadily expanding its range of activities to present the people with the beauty of their melodies and ensure that they live high quality lives. Beginning with the 1st conductor Lee Sang-deok, all conductors of the orchestra (2nd Kim Byeong-gyu, 3rd Lee Gyu-hyeong, 4th Lee Jong-heon, 5th Ju Ho, 6th Cho Gyu-jin, 7th Yu Gwang) up to the current 8th conductor Ryu Sung-Kyu have played a vital role in letting the excellence of Cheongju’s regional culture be known.
  • The tunes springing forth from the perfect union of the orchestra members and the conductor are sweet yet majestic, and at times solemn. Many world-famous artists have worked in harmony with the CheongJu Philharmonic Orchestra to this day, and famed conductors are longing to work with them.
  • Additionally, the orchestra is constantly striving and attempting new approaches at operation in order to expand the scope of their performance and handle a wide repertoire encompassing popular music as well as everything from the classics to contemporary music. These efforts are a part of its aim to orchestrate the development of Chungcheongbuk-do’s music culture and become a cultural product of the region through performance activities based in Cheongju, which is not only a city beloved by its people but also a city of education and culture. Under the leadership of the current conductor Ryu Sung-Kyu, who assumed the position of permanent conductor in December 2014, the CheongJu Philharmonic Orchestra is taking a new leap forward.
