Cheongju City Symbol

Emblem, Seed of Life and Creation

The initial alphabet of Cheong-ju, C and J are designed to depict an image of a seed to symbolize the beginning of life and to embody the dynamic value of creation.

Life and Creation are two key concepts that weave together the past, present, and future of Cheongju. Each identity of Cheongju, City of Life and City of Creation, represent Cheongju as a city where nature, technology, and humanity are harmonized and give life to the City and where new and creative talents are fostered on the foundation of its rich cultural assets and environment.

On another note, the two graphic elements also symbolize the quotation marks, throwing a question to provoke thoughts on what should be contained in the quotation, the seed of life and creation.

Mascot, Saeng-yi & Myeoung-yi

Saeng-yi and Myeoung-yi are the two fairies of Cheongju city born from the seed of Life and Creation.

Saeng-yi is the fairy of green nature, the origin of life, and Myeong-yi radiates the light of Creation, brightening the future.

Just as today’s Cheongju stands on the foundation of the greater synergy created from the integration of Cheongwon county into Cheongju City, the two fairies create one great driving force that gives life to the City and upholds the values of Cheongju.

Known for their graceful, fragrant flowers, magnolia buds swell all over the landscape in late winter / early spring bringing the delightful news of coming of spring. Their graceful and pure white flower buds symbolize the gentle and harmonious citizens with dignity and hope.

Zelkova develops a hard, straight trunk symbolizing the virtue of honesty and dependability without pretense. The many equally balanced branches and the sturdy wood wish for well-balanced development of Cheongju and represent preparation and readiness.

City bird, Magpie

Magpie, a symbol of happiness, is loved by every Korean, and it is believed that the singing of a magpie foretells good luck. It represents a friendly and well-mannered attitude of the citizens of Cheongju, the city of culture and education.

Cheongju is a historic, cultural city, and has long led academic and ideological developments in Korea. As such, we, Cheongju citizens, pledge to be a great beacon of hope to the nation with firm faith and pride and to respect and observe the principles set forth as below:

    a prosperous future.

    community with good faith and cooperation.
