Detailed Information

The house of Euiam Son Byeong-hui is where Son Byeong-hui was born and raised, in the 12th year of King Cheoljong’s (1861) reign during the Joseon Dynasty. Sohn began to study Donghak early and fought against soldiers of the kingdom while leading 100,000 people in Chungcheong-do Province and Gyeongsang-do Province during the Donghak Peasant Revolution. Afterwards, he passed through Japan to take refuge in Shanghai. In 1897, Son became the third religious leader of Donghak and organized Jinbohoe in 1964. In 1907, he returned to Korea and changed the name of Donghak into Cheondogyo. He took over Boseong College and Boseong Middle School under the name of Cheondogyo to cultivate talented people, and declared the independence of Korea as one of the 33 national leaders during the March 1 Movement in 1919.
The house he was born in was a thatched roof house with 4 rooms in the front and 1 room on the sides. It was dismantled and repaired in 1971. A monument was erected in the house in honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1961. In addition, Cheongwon-gun overhauled the house and built a shrine, a wall, three gates, and a relic exhibition room from 1991 to 1999.
