Chungnyeolsa Shrine for Dongnae Magistrate Song Sang-hyeon

Chungnyeolsa Shrine, Monument 16 of Chungcheongbuk-do, is dedicated to the ancestral tablet of Dongnae Magistrate Song Sang Hyeon, who died fighting during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. In the 28th year of King Seonjo's (1595) reign, the tomb was relocated to here from Dongnae, and the shrine was then built in the 2nd year of King Gwanghaegun’s (1610) reign. Afterwards, it was repaired on several occasions. Song Sang Hyeon had a pen name of Cheongok and was given the posthumous title of Chungnyeol. Song passed the state exam in the 9th year of King Seonjo’s (1576) reign, and became the Dongnae Magistrate in 24th year of the king (1591). When Japan invaded Korea in 1592 and Japanese soldiers descended upon the Koreans in Dongnae Fortress, he assembled a military unit and fought the Japanese soldiers but was killed in action. Song’s grave is located in a mountain behind Chungnyeolsa Shrine alongside a memorial stone that was erected in the 1st year of the King Hyunjong’s (1659) reign. A loyal subject gate stands in front the shrine, having been built in the 28th year of King Seonjo’s (1595) reign. The current building was built in 1980. The wooden building with roofing tiles has three side walls and double eaves. Inside is a living room with three sliding doors and a porch. Three gates were built before the yard and a stone wall has been stacked to protect the shrine. In 2001, the city expanded and overhauled the place and its neighboring land to build an exhibition room and shrine to honor the spirit of his patriotic loyalty. The area fringing the house was turned into a park where citizens could take in its history.
