소개
이 석탑(石塔)은 본래 2중(重) 기단(基壇)을 갖춘 5층 석탑(五層石塔)이었으나 현재는 상대갑석(上臺甲石) 이하의 기단부가 결실되고 탑신부(塔身部)도 3층(三層)만이 남아 있다. 상대갑석은 2개의 돌로 조성되었으며 5층 옥신석(屋身石)과 상륜부(相輪部)는 근래에 새로 조성하여 놓은 것이다. 상대갑석 위의 탑신부는 그 중앙에 여래좌상(如來坐像) 1구씩을 양각(陽刻)하였다. 여기 앉아 계신 부처님(坐像)들은 각 면(面)마다 각기 다른 불상으로 현재의 위치대로 본다면 동(東)쪽은 약사여래상(藥師如來像), 남(南)쪽은 비로자나불상(毘盧遮那佛像), 서(西)쪽은 석가여래상(釋迦如來像), 북(北)쪽은 아미타여래상(阿彌陀如來像)이다. 각층(各層)의 옥개석(屋蓋石)은 층급받침이 5단이고, 처마 밑으로 낙수홈이 음각 되었으며, 윗면에는 2단의 괴임으로 그 위의 옥신을 받들도록 되어 있는데 낙수면은 경사가 약간 급한 편이다. 이 탑은 결실된 기단부와 2, 3, 4층의 옥신석 및 4층 옥개석을 제외하고도 현재 높이가 3.3m이니 당초에는 6m 이상되는 장중하고 우수한 석탑이었을 것으로 추정된다. 조성 시기는 사방불(四方佛)을 배치한 양식이나 그 불상의 조각수법, 또는 옥개석의 5단 층급받침, 기단갑석의 양식 등으로 미루어 9～10세기 초의 통일신라시대 작품으로 추정된다. 실측치는 전체 높이 326cm, 상대갑석 한쪽 길이 192cm, 높이 20cm이고, 사방여래좌상은 높이 81.5cm, 양면 폭 59.5cm이다.
