Tourist Attraction Information

Unbo Kim Ki Chang built House of Unbo which harmonizes with a small mountain which looks like an unfolded screen, wide paddy fields and patches, and nature over a course of 7 years after his wife, the painter Park Rae Hyeon died in 1978. Kim lived here until 2001 when he died at the age of 88.

House of Unbo is sitting on 89,000㎡ of land that contains his Korean-style house, art gallery, tea-house, ceramic workshop, and his grave.

In 1976, when his wife, the painter Park Rae Hyeon (Uhyang) died, he moved his residence to Cheongju, the hometown of his mother. He purchased land bit by bit and in 1984 completed House of Unbo in Hyeongdong-ri, Naesu-eup, Cheongju-si.
The pavilion is where he used to entertain his guests by communicating through writing. The pond where carps live is where Unbo used to feed the fish.

Unbo Art Gallery was originally established by Dr. Kim Heung Bae, the founder of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, before he donated it to Unbo. It consists of three exhibition halls that shed a light on Kim Ki Chang’s world of works and life, a data room, a video room, an office, and a storage room. The Gallery also contains works of his wife, Uhyang Park Rae Hyeon, and his brother, the painter Kim Ki Man, who now lives in North Korea. Master Unbo died in 2001 at the age of 88, but he remains as an inspiration for those who like painting and aspire to become a painter.
