Culture Heritage Site

A Hyanggyo Confucian School is an organization of the local government and is comparable to today’s public middle school. The place was used to pay respect to old scholars, educate children, spread national philosophies to regions, and enhance local culture with a focus on establishing Confucianism as a traditional social norm in Korea. They began to taper off near the end of the Joseon Dynasty as Seowon, a private educational organization, began to open in each area.

Cheongjuhyanggyo Confucian School is represented by Daeseongjeon Shrine, which is a Confucian shrine, and Myeongnyundang Hall, an auditorium which serves as the center of Confucian education. Daeseongjeon Shrine pays tribute to the memory of Confucius and leading Confucian scholars from both Korean and China, and holds the Seokjeonje Ceremony in honor of them every spring and fall. The yard fronting Daeseongjeon is popular as a venue for traditional Korean weddings.

Its affiliated buildings are the Dongmu Shrine and Seomu Shrine in front of Daeseongjeon Shrine as well as the Yanghyeondang and Gyeonguije outside Oesammun Gate. Yanghyeondang was used as a classroom and a meeting room while Gyeonguije was an office room. This place enhances the cultural level of Cheongju citizens by conducting a liberal arts education such as calligraphy, Chinese letters, and traditional etiquette.
