Sangdang sanseong

Sangdangsanseong Fortress, which shows the dignity of Cheongju’s status as an ancient city with a history of 1,000 years, is the representative building in Cheongju. Even from far away, the rampart is clearly seen as it clings to Sangdangsan Mountain. The fortress acts as a fence that constantly protects the people in Cheongju in emergencies. The rampart was built along the ridgeline of the mountain. It is 4.2km around the fortress which is 4m to 5m high. Some of the fortress was repaired during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. In the 42nd year of King Sukjong’s (1716) reign, the fortress was built back stacking cubic granite. Inside the fortress are five ponds, three temples, a public office building, and a warehouse. At the moment, the fortress has three gates - Gongnammun (South Gate), Mihomun Gate (South Gate), and Jindongmun Gate (East Gate) – as well as two hidden gates, three guard platforms and three water gates. Dongjangdae Command Post, where Joseon soldiers underwent training, was restored in 1992 to its original state. A traditional Korean house village is situated within the fortress and sells traditional Korean liquors and Bindae-tteok (Mung Bean Pancake).
