Title Local bookstores to operate book buyback program in 2022
Writer Library Policy Team
Subject Cheongju City Library is planning to implement its “book buyback program in local bookstores” starting in Feb. 7 to September to serve its citywide avid readers.

This project has been promoted since last year to revitalize the city’s local bookstores, which has seen stagnant sales due to the pandemic, and received support and interest from the residents.

Through this buyback program, residents can purchase books from 23 local bookstores in Cheongju, and return them to the bookstore where they purchased the book within 21 days for a refund.

This program is only available to regular library members who can purchase up to two books per month (each limited to KRW 30,000 in price) using their personal card.

However, the program’s applicable books exclude: books that have been published more than five years ago; comics, such as children’s educational cartoons; test prep books; exam books; university materials; advanced-level specialty books; periodicals; non-book items; books in other language; and complete collections.

Those who are interested can apply on the library website every first weekday of the month (Feb. 7 for the first month of the program) and purchase books at the designated bookstores upon approval of application.

Please note that the application remains open on a first-come, first-served basis every month due to the limited budget, and be aware of the application date and regulations on the library website. For details, contact the Policy Team of Cheongju City Library (☎ +82-43-201-4082).

A spokesperson of Cheongju City Library said, “We hope that the book buyback program remains firmly established to contribute to the virtuous cycle of cooperation with local bookstores and revive the local economy that has remained stagnant due to the pandemic.”
