Writer Medical Management Team
Subject Cheongju Public Health Center announced that it plans to fully operate the emergency room monitoring system for ‘cold-related illnesses*’, which constantly monitors the occurrence of patients with cold-related illnesses, from December 1 to February 28 next year to minimize health damages caused by the winter cold.
*Cold-related illnesses: Diseases that can cause damage to the human body directly caused by cold temperature, such as hypothermia, frostbite, and chilblains.

The emergency room monitoring system for cold-related illnesses will be operated by six emergency medical institutions in Cheongju (Cheongju St. Mary’s Hospital, Cheongju Medical Center, Chungbuk National University Hospital, Hana General Hospital, Hankook General Hospital and Hyosung Hospital) and two hospitals equipped with emergency rooms (OChang Jungang Hospital and Cheongju Hyundae Hospital).

As a result of operating the emergency room monitoring system for cold-related illnesses from December 2020 to February 2021, a total of 433 people were reported nationwide, an increase of 42.9% (130 people) compared to the previous year (303 people), where 13 patients were reported in Cheongju (based on the location of medical institutions).

Among them, the most reported age group was those aged over 80 at 21.0% (91 patients), followed by 17.6% (76 people) in their 60s and 16.4% (71 people) in their 50s. It was confirmed that the older generations were more vulnerable to severe diseases such as hypothermia and the most common place of occurrence was outdoors, such as roadside and near houses, at 80.4% (348 people).

A spokesperson from the public health center emphasized, “Cold-related illnesses are likely to cause casualties if dealt with inadequately. However, they can be prevented by taking appropriate measures in advance. Citizens need to pay attention to the weather forecast and follow health regulations against severe cold by checking the “feels like” temperature when going out.”
