Subject Cheongju-si confirmed on providing 45 billion won for its school meal program.
On the 7th, the Cheongju city government held the School Meal Program Grant Evaluation Committee (President: Kim Hang-seop, the vice mayor of Cheongju-si), and decided on the provision of KRW 45 billion as ‘The 2020 School Meal Program Fund’.
On the day, the Evaluation Committee determined the unit price and the form of a grant for the 2020 school meal program in the presence of representatives from the school meal program industry, parents, farms, members of city council, and public officers from related departments, and so on.
The free meal plan will provide a total of KRW 34 billion, which is comprised of a KRW 13.6 billion state grant, and a KRW 20.4 billion city grant. A total of 391 students from 179 elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and special-education schools will benefit from the program.
The environmentally-friendly school meal program will provide benefits to 104,173 students from 262 educational facilities including public and private kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and special-education schools. The program subsidizes the different cost of purchasing environmentally-friendly agricultural and livestock products which are normally more expensive than conventional agricultural and livestock products. On average, the program will provide KRW 500 per person for 185 days per year. In 2015 and 2016, the program provided KRW 5 billion, and KRW 7.5 billion, respectively. From 2017, the program has been providing KRW 11 billion.
The environmentally-friendly school meal program is required to prioritize the use of local agricultural products produced in Cheongju, and guarantee the cost of production. This ensures that the local farmers and producers of environmentally-friendly products have a stable sales channel and income, increasing competitiveness of the local agricultural industry as well as providing healthy meals for students.
Prioritizing the health of children and adolescents in their growth period, the city is operating strict safety measures conducting 450 examinations in one year on pesticide and antibiotic residue on the agricultural and livestock supplies in order to improve the quality of school meals and maximize income for local farmers and producers. In addition, the city will execute tight management of the entire process from production to distribution, for example, encouraging the production of products that are on the supply list in order to maximize the consumption of local agricultural and livestock products.
