Subject Jamdubong Park to Be Reborn as a Silkworm Park at the End of This Year

- About KRW 40 Billion in Taxes Needed to Build a 130,000 ㎡ Park to Be Saved

After being designated as a park in 1967, Jamdubong Park was not able to be built for over 50 years. However, it will now be built through a private development special project.

Through the private development of urban parks, it seems possible to solve the long-standing civil petitions of the landlords arising from the limitations on property rights, reduce the financial burdens of Cheongju City, and, at the same time, seek the balanced development of the city.

Jamdubong Park is a long-term unexecuted park with a total area of 180,000㎡ located in Sugok-dong and Bunpyeong-dong. Of those, about 130,000㎡, which is about 70.8%, will be constructed as a park for the citizens through private development, and it is expected to reduce the land compensation and park construction costs by KRW 40 billion.

Furthermore, for the individual landlords, whose lands have mostly been used as a public space, a path to land compensation is now finally opened after 50 years of them waiting for a park to be built.

Jamdubong Park was named due to the fact that the shape of the mountain looks similar to a silkworm’s head.
Based on this, a bridge in the shape of a silkworm will be installed in place of the existing suspension bridge, and a mulberry colony will be built to revive the site as a place that maximizes the concept of a silkworm park.

A silkworm-shaped play facility, wildflower garden, and tree education center will be constructed, and in connection to these, various programs using the park will be operated starting from next year. Thus, it can be used in various ways as a space for children to play and study.

Furthermore, outdoor tables will be installed at the rest area in the pin oak tree forest, and is expected to be used as a community space by the citizens, who will also enjoy its wide open view.

Meanwhile, a resident who lives near the Jamdubong Park said, “Jamdubong Park used to be dirty due to numerous junk shops in that area and people habitually throwing out trash,” and continued, “The park was used for just taking walks until now, but I hope that it will be transformed into a park equipped with various facilities to make it possible for people to enjoy diverse experiences and activities.”

A city officer asked for many understanding and interests from the citizens, saying, “Once the construction of Saejeokgul Park along with Jamdubong Park is completed at the end of the year, it will have huge effect in improving the surrounding urban environment,” and continuing, “I strongly hope that the worries on private park developments would somewhat be dispelled through the use of the parks.”
