It was announced that Cheongju City had been finalized as the host region for the 2019 Korea Reading Festival. The Korea Reading Festival, carried out by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) since 2014, is a project that selects local governments that have taken the initiative in promoting reading culture and declares them ‘reading cities’ in order to support nationwide reading festivals. Cheongju City, the home of Jikji, has integrated the capabilities of its regional reading culture and toiled ceaselessly to attract a reading festival that could stand out on the national stage.

Cheongju City has secured KRW 300 million in government funding, and will match the funding with its own budget to work alongside organizations related to reading and publication, libraries, and bookstores to carry out yearly programs for the purpose of revitalizing the regional reading culture. Furthermore, a wide range of festive events for the Korea Reading Festival – from book-related exhibitions to experiences, symposiums, and discussions – will be carried out at Cheongju Arts Center and Cheongju Early Printing Museum, as well as the surrounding areas from August 30 to September 1.

The competition to become this year’s host region was fierce this year, and Cheongju City beat out 5 other local governments through a 3-stage screening process that consisted of operating plans (1st stage), on-site evaluations (2nd stage), and PPT presentations and comprehensive evaluations (3rd stage).

When applying for the selection, Cheongju City settled on the theme of ”The Origin of Records Blooms with Books”, and true to its theme, the project plans for the reading festival is full of unforgettable reading experiences for visitors to Cheongju by connecting many projects that place emphasis on the significance of records and books, projects that allow for citizen planning and participation, and Cheongju’s unique cultural assets.

Cheongju City will be forming a promotion council and executive council in efforts to prepare for the greatest reading festival ever in time for its opening in autumn.
