Cheongju Craft Biennale (Chairman of the Organizing Committee Han Beum-deuk ) conferred the Letter of Appointmentas the exhibition director of 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale to Professor Ahn Jae-yeong of Gwangju National University of Education at the Mayor’s Office in the Cheongju City Hall on the 12th

The Exhibition Director Ahn Jae-yeong graduated from ScouleMestierid’Arte with a major in Architectural Ceramics , and majored in Art Education (PhD) at Hongik University and Artistical Philosophy (PhD) at Sungkyunkwan University. Currently, he is serving as the museum director and professor of Fine Arts Education at Gwangju National University of Education, and Culture and Arts Education and Planning at the graduate school in the same university.

In particular, Exhibition Director Ahn Jae-yeonghas served as curator for the project special exhibition of the 33rd Biennale in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which is considered as one of world’s top 3 biennales along with the Venice and Whitney Biennales. He has also served as the commissioner, exhibition director, and operating committee member for the Bangladesh Biennale in 2014 and 2016, thus, earning a reputation as an expert in the global Biennale field.

In addition, he is actively working, serving as the director of Asia Craft Culture Research Institute, a cultural arts member of Political Committee in Seoul Metropolitan Council , and a columnist for Art Chosun .

From now on, Exhibition Director Ahn Jae-yeong will be in charge of planning international symposiums and major exhibitions such as the planned exhibition for the 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale.
In the press briefing held after the Letter of Appointment was conferred, Exhibition Director Ahn Jae-yeong revealed the overview on the theme and overall programs for the next year’s Biennale, with the decisions having been previously made at the 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale Preparation Workshop that was held on the 7th (Fri).

The theme for the 11thCheongju Craft Biennale is 《Craft of Future and Dreams-Opening up the Mongyudowon≫, which proposes to open a new future for the crafts by presenting craftworks containing the fantastic joy and ideal beauty in the inhumane lives and desolate reality of contemporary society.Mongyudowon means paradise.

As the exhibition director has been appointed and the themehas been selected, the organizing committee will begin preparing for the Biennale in full scale, such as planned exhibitions, invited country pavilions, international craft contest, industrial pavilion, academics and education, and art gallery project.

Exhibition Director Ahn Jae-yeong expressed his idea of planning to hold 5 – 6 sub-themes under the theme 《Craft of Future and Dreams-Opening up the Mongyudowon≫, and announced his aspiration, saying, “I will not only use the Old Tobacco Plant, which is the main exhibition hall, but also use the cultural and historic spaces in Cheongju to present exhibitions that would lead the crafts within the buildings and glass exhibition displays out to the world.” Furthermore, with his words, “I will destroy the boundary between the craftsmen in the region and the citizens, and realize the Utopia of Craft Biennale, which will be created together by everyone like the Mureung-dowon (meaning paradise),” he raisedexpectations for the 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale.

Meanwhile, the 11thCheongju Craft Biennale will be held at the Old Tobacco Plant, which will complete its remodeling in July next year, for 40 days from September 25 to November 3, 2019.
