- Expected to Raise Profits and Environmental Welfare of Local Residents and Reduce Greenhouse Gases -

Cheongju City will be completing the construction of its Eco-friendly Energy Town this coming mid-December.

The Eco-friendly Energy Town construction project was implemented as a part of government policy to utilize biogas occurring from basic environmental facilities such as incineration plants, livestock manure treatment facilities, and food waste treatment facilities to produce new renewable energies. This would help conserve the environment while at the same time resolving the issue of energy and greenhouse gases.

Cheongju City was chosen for the Eco-friendly Energy Town construction project in 2015 through a public recruitment process hosted by the Ministry of Environment.

The city plans to use the biogas occurring from the organic-to-energyfacilities in Sindae-dong, Heungdeok-gu that processes the wastewater occurring from food waste to produce and sell it as electricity, and collect the waste heat in the process toproduce warm water to supply 135 households in the neighboring villages.

Not only does the project provide benefits for the residents, who have long suffered due to the environment, such as foul odors, but it also creates income through the installation of 2 agricultural produce drying plants for the village communities.

Trying to produce enough energy for people to live on without polluting the environment is not as easy as it sounds.

However, by converting facilities responsible for environmental pollution into ones that produce eco-friendly energy, Cheongju City looks to be fighting against both environmental pollution and global warming at the same time.

An official from Cheongju City stated, “We will minimize environmental damage such as climate change by seeking out facilities that can produce new renewable energies by using basic environmental facilities and work to operate eco-friendly and resident-friendly waste disposal facilities.”
