Title Cheongju-siEstablishes Cultural Governance to Implement Cultural City

Subject - Signed MOU for Cultural City to Be Created by Experts, Citizens, and Public Administration Working Together –

Cheongju-si signed an MOU with regional organizations and groups at the main conference room of the city hall at 4:00 PM on the 20th to create the values of Cheongju together and actively cooperate to build a cultural city.

The signing ofthe MOU took placeon the very same site where the organizations and groups had gathered until then to participate in the citizens’ cultural network Lunch Box Talk, an event implemented by the Cheongju-si to prepare for the creation of the cultural city. The occasion was arranged to seek for ways to conduct business connections as well as discover cultural city projects together and create cultural governance, which is vital for implementing and designationCheongju-si as a cultural city.

Beginning with this MOU, a promotion committee composed of hands-on workers of each organization and group will be established, anda shared table of urban cultural network connecting experts-citizens-public administration will be jointly operated to prepare and implement the cultural city.

Cheongju Mayor Han Beum-deuk said, “With the goal of making Cheongjua cultural city together with the citizens by establishing a human-centered cultural ecosystem, we will ensure cooperation between experts, citizens, and public administration to build a true cultural city together,” and added, “We will do our best so that Cheongju-si will be selected as the first city in Korea to be designated as a cultural city by law.”

A cultural city refers to a city designated in accordance with Article 2 of the Regional Culture Promotion Act to strengthen cultural creativity by efficiently utilizing the characteristic cultural resources of each region. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) will designate 30 cultural cities throughout the whole country by 2022, and the designated cities will receive business expenses for 5 years to create cultural cities.

Meanwhile, Cheongju-si has prepared projects which would serve as the base for a cultural city since 2016, such as operating a citizens’ network to build a self-viable cultural ecosystem, archiving regional cultural resources, training creative talents, and building the capabilities of regional cultural experts. At the end of August, it will submit an application to be designated as a cultural city to the MCST.
