Title Cheongju City to "Go All Out" to Expand the Restaurant Hygiene Grade System
Writer Cheongju
Subject - Various support and efforts to establish a clean environment for food safety

Cheongju City is putting its full administrative efforts into expanding the Restaurant Hygiene Grade system with the aim of ensuring food safety and creating a clean environment for citizens.

The Restaurant Hygiene Grade System is being conducted under the authority of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The Korea Agency of HACCP Accreditation and Services evaluates restaurants' hygiene levels and assigns qualified restaurants three grades (excellent, very good, and good). The agency later discloses such info for their promotion.

In order to expand this system, Cheongju is providing tailored consulting for 28 restaurants, technical support for 50 restaurants. The city is practicing two intensive promotion events in high-foot traffic areas such as Cheongju International Airport and Osong Station. Additionally, four sessions of group trainings were held and two billboards have been placed to publicize the grade system. As a result, currently 464 restaurants have received grades according to the Restaurant Hygiene Grade System.

This figure is considered significant compared to other cities; 433 in Seongnam, 380 in Cheonan, 465 in Hwaseong, and 180 in Sejong.

In order to assign more restaurants with hygiene grades, Cheongju is striving to set a pilot zone for the system in Mansu-ri, Osong-eup. To this end, the city plans to promote the system by creating videos of exemplary restaurants with grades that ensure good taste and proper sanitary conditions and uploading them on social media.

In addition, all efforts will be put into expanding the grade system through Consumer Food Hygiene Officers’ visit and promotion. The city will strive to ensure the restaurants which had already received a good grade to get a good hygiene grade repeatedly and incentivize restaurants to acquire grades.

An official of Cheongju stated, “Cheongju will boost the local economy by taking various measures to expand the hygiene grade system. We will manage food safety for the prevention of food poisoning and therefore providing safe food and improving food culture.”
