Title A Large Shielding Facility in Ochang-eup to Enable Radio Wave Tests in Cheongju
Writer Cheongju
Subject - Commencement of the construction of a "Radio Wave Playground," to promote advanced industries such as self-driving cars

Cheongju City held a groundbreaking ceremony of the Radio Wave Playground at 10 AM on Jun. 1 at the conference room of Institute of Convergence Technology (Ochang Campus) at Chungbuk National University.

Around 60 people from industries, academia and research institutes attended the ceremony, including: Shin Byung-dae, vice mayor of Cheongju, Byeon Jae-il, member of the National Assembly, Hong Jin-bae, head of the Office of Network Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, Lee Woo-jong, vice governor for administrative affairs of Chungcheongbuk-do, and Koh Chang-seop, president of Chungbuk National University.

In March, Cheongju was selected along with Chungcheongbuk-do and Chungbuk National University for the construction and operation of the 2022 Regional Base Radio Wave Playground Project conducted by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The Radio Wave Playground is a large-scale electromagnetic shielding facility that prevents interference or damage of external radio waves and supports radio wave tests of a wide range of converged devices. Particularly, radio wave tests of large ICT converged devices including self-driving cars and drones can be taken.

The detailed design was completed last year, and by this December, the large-scale shielding test facility (1,345 m2) and the support facility (578 m2) are slated to be built. Furthermore, necessary equipment for tests will be introduced with investments totaling KRW 11.28 billion (total cost KRW 12.71 billion).

After the construction is completed, the support for facility and technical analysis will be provided so that local businesses can freely take a radio wave test for various purposes such as the development of a prototype.

The Radio Wave Playground built in Ochang-eup, Cheongju, will help reduce inconveniences for businesses that have to go all the way to facilities in metropolitan cities thanks to good accessibility. The facility will offer the opportunities of further development for industries in the region and promote research in the future radio wave field.

An official of Cheongju said, “Cheongju will strive to create an industrial ecosystem by connecting local infrastructure including the testbed center (C-track) for self-driving cars, which is tailored to meet the requirements of the self-driving vehicle industry, the Chungju Transport Machinery and Parts Radio Wave Center, and Sejong (a city specialized for autonomous driving).”
