Cheongju Archives, which will systematically and scientifically preserve the historic records of Cheongju-si, such as its integration spirit and process as the first of its kind in the constitutional government to accomplish self-integration by the citizens, is receiving attention from the entire nation. After opening on December 19th last year, the site has been visited by officials from Gwangju Metropolitan City, Daejeon Metropolitan City, Cheongju Academic Research Institute to study Cheongju academically, and Chuncheon-si, and various places nationwide, including Jeongseon-gun, are asking for benchmarking. Cheongju Archives is a space to store 550,000 specialized records, the first of its kind for local governments, and it was reborn as specialized archives for preserving documents by remodeling the lodgings of the riot police of the old Cheongju Seobu Police Station located in Bokdae-dong, Heungdeok-gu. This Archive, which has gross floor area of 2286.35㎡ (3 levels above ground), is equipped with office/reading/sorting rooms, exhibition space, storage facilities, and a computerizing work room. A total project cost of KRW 2.535 billion was invested into building it (KRW 500 million from special subsidy tax, and KRW 2.035 billion from the city government). The officials from Chuncheon city government, who visited on the 31st last month, were very surprised that a separate archive was prepared to preserve all the records on display in one space for people to read and see, and also were curious as to how the local government was able to secure national budget for the archive construction project, which is one of the current agendas at hand.
