Cheongju-si has warned citizens to be on the lookout for Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) infection, which spreads via drinking water and food products during the summer. EHEC infection is a Group 1 infectious disease that occurs when someone is infected with EHEC, a form of pathogenic coliform bacillus. Its incubation period ranges from 2 to 10 days (average of 3 to 4 days), and clinical symptoms of the disease include fever, diarrhea, bloody excrement, vomiting, and severe abdominal cramps. Patients of the disease may exhibit various progressions, ranging from no symptoms to death by complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS occurs in less than 10% of all cases of EHEC infections, and the main clinical aspects progress from hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. It has a known fatality rate of 2 to 7%. According to the analysis carried out by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the epidemiological characteristics of 443 patients reported to have EHEC infection from 2011 to 2016, an average of 74 cases of EHEC infection occurred every year from 2011 to 2016. Patients generally became infected in the summer, from May to August, and infection generally occurred in children under the age of 5. Jang Jeong-su, the head of the Cheongwon Public Health Center, said, “In order to prevent Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, it is important to wash your hands with soap under flowing water for at least 30 seconds, cook your food, boil water before drinking it, wash fruits and vegetables with clean water and peel them before eating, cook fish, meat, and vegetables in a hygienic way, such as by using separate cutting boards, not cook when you’re suffering from diarrhea, and follow other aspects of the ‘Waterborne and Food-borne Infection Prevention Regulations.’”
