Cheongju-si will continue promoting Broadband Convergence Network (BcN) Initiative this year for 35 farming villages with less than 50 households.

The BcN Initiative in rural area is a project to reduce network infrastructure divide between urban area and rural area and provide universal broadcasting telecommunication through 100Mbps Internet connection in small-sized farming villages having less than 50 households.

As a small-sized farming village with not many residents does not have a good telecommunication infrastructure, Internet service was virtually difficult to provide for demanding subscription fee in applying high-speed Internet or Internet TV, such as the cost of track construction.

However, this BcN Initiative will wipe out much of information divide between urban area and rural area as it enables residents of farming villages to apply for high-speed Internet without additional cost, like residents living in urban areas.

The city authorities will construct broadband convergence network in 35 villages such as Giam-ri, Miwon-myeon, no later than November this year by investing 460 million won including government expenditure (do expenditure and private capital).

Under the supervision of Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Cheongju-si started to construct broadband convergence network in 2010 with the government, Chungcheongbuk-do, and the private sector and will complete the construction by 2017. They completed constructing telecommunication infrastructure in 107 villages as of 2014.

"Cheongju-si will do the best to select target areas and provide service so as not to omit a farming village with less than 50 households from the initiative," said a city official, "we will make efforts to reduce information divide between urban area and rural area with consistent projects."
