Title Cheongju City Earns the Best Score Ever with an A on the Transport Culture Index!
Writer Cheongju
Subject - Upgraded from Grade C to A, ranking second among 29 cities with a population of 300,000 -

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport's 2022 Transport Culture Index, Cheongju City was ranked second (Grade A) among 29 cities with a population of 300,000 or more.

It is a remarkable accomplishment that the city now ranks nine levels higher than it did in the previous year.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport evaluates the Transport Culture Index annually by classifying 229 lower-level local governments across the country into four groups: cities with a population of at least 300,000 and cities, counties, and autonomous districts with a population of less than 300,000.

It utilizes 18 evaluation indices under the three categories of driving behavior, walking behavior, and traffic safety to measure the level of traffic safety awareness and traffic culture.

Cheongju City received an A for driving behavior, including the rate of compliance with stop lines at crosswalks and the rate of seatbelt use, as measured by an observational survey.

In addition, the city ranked first in the area of traffic safety, including attaining perfect scores in traffic safety expertise, securing related budgets, and commercial vehicle safety management.

Last year, Cheongju City spent KRW 24.3 billion on a variety of projects to create a safe environment for both drivers and pedestrians.

The projects included improvements in six areas with high traffic accident rates, upgrades for 200 school zones, and enhancement of one area for pedestrian safety.
The city government nurtured a pedestrian-friendly environment by installing 103 LED lights at crosswalks, accessible pedestrian signals, and floor traffic lights that prevent accidents involving smartphone users crossing the street.

It also promoted the safety and convenience of older adults, children, and persons with disabilities by providing incentives for 1,170 older adult drivers who give up their licenses, educating 8,160 children at traffic safety training centers, and providing special assistance (Happy Call service) over 240,000 times.

Publicity initiatives focused on improving traffic safety included the dissemination of pamphlets and the hanging of banners at busy intersections, as well as the production and broadcast of public campaign videos for television.

To take the safety management of commercial vehicles to the next level, Cheongju City conducted safety inspections of city bus and taxi transport companies, crackdowns on overnight parking outside of commercial vehicle garages, and the selection of outstanding traffic safety companies.

Strengthening cooperation networks with related organizations such as police stations, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and the Korea Road Traffic Authority also contributed to this year's performance.

"We will further strengthen our traffic safety policies this year by installing personal mobility-only parking spaces and educating older adults about traffic safety through visits," stated a city official. "We hope for active collaboration to increasing citizens' awareness and interest in traffic culture.”
