Title	Cheongju will changes its downtown landscape in 2017

Subject	- Proceeding townscape improvement project in Sangdang-ro streetscape, Cheongjudaegyo Bridge, Musimcheon stream Cherry Blossom street - Cheongju-si is starting the townscape improvement project in Sangdang-ro streetscape, Cheongjudaegyo Bridge and Musimcheon stream Cherry Blossom street to systematically organize the city. Musimcheon stream Cherry Blossom street is the popular place of Cheongju during the flowering season. However, the public has requested to install lighting because the beautiful flower is invisible in dark. The city as acquired budget for next year and will create night view on street from Cheongjudaegyo Bridge to no.1 Uncheongyo bridge. This is expected to promote local economy by attracting tourist and vitalizing Musimcheon park and Seomun market. Since the 1970s, Cheongjudaegyo Bridge has been in maintenance several times, but its old and ordinary shape disaccord with the surrounding townscape. Also, the bridge is not suitable for pedestrian, the lighting is insufficient, and the bridge has no liveliness. Therefore, Cheongju-si is planning to install night view lighting on the bridge which harmoniously symbolize and identify Cheongju. As for the pedestrian pathway and bridge fences, the city will reorganize the public facility to create symbolic space of people of Cheongju that is simple and differentiated but functional. Cheongjudaegyo Bridge will be the center of relaxation and culture by expanding the cultural flow of Musimcheon stream and Seomungyo bridge to Sajikdaero and installing the night view lightings. Sangdangro street is the center axis of downtown as there are Chungbuk-do office, Cheongju City Hall and other governmental offices, Yukgeori market and Seongan-gil. However, the organic integrity of public facilities such as street lamp, sign post or bus stops is insufficient. Also, street furnitures such as pathway, bollard or fences are damaged which worsens the pedestrian condition and lack of lighting has darkened the entire city and threatening the safety of pedestrians. The city is planning to create townscape around Sangdangro street which people can wlak and enjoy. This plan will enhance the focus of downtown, lead to recovery of business zone and contribute to the vitalization of local economy. Meanwhile, Cheongju-si has settled 2015 townscape plan, revised townscape ordinance in 2016 and finished system organization. On December 19, the city council has voted on 2017 budget plan, and secured total 3.9 billion won budget, 500 million won for Musimcheon stream Cherry Blossom scape improvement project, 1.9 billion and 1.5 billion for Cheongjudaegyo Bridge and Sangdangro streetscape each. The city has repaired public facility that is in disorder or ordinary on Sajikdaero, the horizontal axis of downtown Cheongju, installed cityscape lighting around Sangdang park to get rid of dark city image depending on lights from the stores, and conducted cityscape improvement project on Sajikdaero called "pedestrian-friendly street" to change dark image of downtown as a test project. With the project, the street with theme project around Yukgeori market was conducted which later was awarded by Minister of Transportation in "2016 Korea cityscape design competition" which awards high-quality design cases in urban area.
