Together with Shasta of the U.S. and Naporinas of Great Britain, Chojeong Mineral Water is recognized as one of the world’s three famous mineral water. As it shoots up from a limestone layer 100 m underground, Chojeong mineral water is cold spicy carbonated water.
This carbonated water was discovered at Naesu-eup Chojeong-ri about 600 years ago. According to Geography book or dynasty diary, King Sejong stayed here for 117 days to cure his eye disease. The efficacy of Chojeong mineral water is commonly ascribed to abundant radium ingredients in the water. This ingredient is known to be effective not only for eye disease but for skin disease as well.

Origin of Chojeong Mineral Water

Chojeong mineral water is regarded as one of the world’s most famous mineral water together with Shasta mineral water of the U.S. and Naporinas mineral water of Great Britain. Besides, Chojeong mineral water is a world renowned mineral water with 600 years of history as recognized by F.D.A. On March 2, 1444, King Sejong of Chosun Dynasty came to this place and stayed for 60 days to treat his eye disease. King Sejo is also known to have visited this place to cure his disease.

According to Cheongju-mok sancheon of Dongguk Yeoji Seungram, “There is spicy water in a place that is 39 li apart from Cheongju to the east, which cures skin disease when taking a bath with this”. Also, according to Jibong Yuseol written by Li Sugwang, “Although there are various spicy water in the country, those from Gwangju and Cheongju are most famous”. It is commonly said that the efficacy of spicy water is the greatest in the months of July and August during summer. Hence, many people come to this place to take a bath on one of the three dog days and on July 15 of lunar calendar.

History of Chojeong Mineral Water

At the foot of Chungbuk Cheongju city, Chojeong-ri Gunyeosan mountain --which is famous for the 9 Taoist fairies who ascended to heaven long time ago--, natural carbonated water shoots up. This clear mineral water had spicy taste. In 1444 (Sejong 26), King Sejong personally came to this place and stayed for 60 days to cure his eye disease. Later, King Sejo is also known to have visited this place.

There are records on Chojeong mineral water in Vol. 15 of Dongguk Yeoji Seungram and Vol. 103 of Chosun Wangjo Sillok. Even now, to manufacture and sell ‘Natural Cider’, ‘McCall’, and ‘Top C’ using this mineral water, quite a few people are waiting in line.
