Cheongju Historic Museum of Baekje opens 2023 Special Exhibition
– Special exhibition of Cheongju Historic Museum of Baekje’s collection: Bronze Mirror of Goryeo, Reflection of Life – Cheongju announced that Cheongju Historic Museum of Baekje's plan to hold the special exhibition, “Bronze Mirror of Goryeo, Reflection of Life” at the temporary exhibition hall from December 5, 2023 to February 28, 2024. The exhibition will show the iconographic meanings and the lifestyles of the Goryeo dynasty reflected in bronze mirrors and feature the metal works and superb metalworking techniques at that time. The city organized the exhibition with the artifacts donated by Koam Cho Gye-hyung to the city in 2001. The exhibition especially features the mirror inscribed with “Hwangbi Changcheon (煌丕昌天; clear sunny sky),” which was popular during the Goryeo dynasty after being introduced from China and the Bronze Mirror with Two Flying Dragons engraved with dragons circling each other among 84 collections. The exhibition is divided into three parts. Part 1: Bronze Mirror, Mirror with Diverse Patterns demonstrates the definition and usage of the mirror and the meanings of the patterns by displaying diverse patterns carved in the mirrors. Part 2: Importing and Imitating Bronze Mirror shows and compares the bronze mirrors made in the Song and Yuan dynasty and those made in the Goryeo dynasty. Part 3: Bronze Mirror, Reflection of Everyday Life explores the lifestyle of the people in the Goryeo dynasty through the patterns of the mirrors. It shows the mirrors used as grave goods and in everyday life. A city official of Cheongju stated, “We hope many visitors will enjoy the beauty of the bronze mirrors of the Goryeo dynasty through the exhibition. We will do our best to set up a sound donation culture.” The exhibition is open from 9 AM to 6 PM except on Sundays and January 1. The admission is free. |
