Cheongju announced the implementation of the "2024 Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Project" to create a safer and more pleasant living environment, aiming to realize a city that is good to live in.

This project will introduce customized Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)* strategies in areas vulnerable to crime, aiming to minimize spaces that induce crime and alleviate citizens' sense of insecurity.
* Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED): A method of preventing or reducing the occurrence of crime by modifying or improving the structure of buildings or urban spaces to make them resistant to crime.

In 2024, a total budget of KRW 500 million will be allocated to establish a crime prevention environment (A=600,000 m2) in Mochung-dong of Seowon-gu and Uncheon-Sinbong-dong of Heungdeok-gu, including:

Installation of surveillance cameras, emergency bells, and LED street security lights in areas frequently affected by the five major violent crimes; mural projects for pedestrian environment improvement; installation of ground traffic lights and landscape lighting; placement of gas pipe covers, safety mirrors, and side gates; and application of fluorescent materials.

In March, community meetings and surveys will be conducted in the project areas to gather feedback from local residents. In coordination with the departments responsible for managing the facilities, the plan is to complete the installations by the end of the year.

Since the establishment of the nation's first comprehensive CPTED plan in 2017, the city has successfully completed CPTED projects in 10 areas, starting with the Yukgeori Market, investing a total of KRW 3.478 billion to date.

Following the completion of these projects, the incidence of major crimes (violence, theft, rape, sexual assault, and murder) decreased by 10% to as much as 66% over the course of a year, significantly improving the psychological well-being of the residents. The overall response from citizens towards the CPTED initiative has been highly positive due to its effectiveness in reducing crime rates and enhancing the sense of security among the community.

A city official of Cheongju said, "By 2025, we plan to reorganize the comprehensive CPTED plan to align with changes in the urban environment and project paradigms, aiming for more efficient project implementation. Our goal is to continuously expand the initiative to minimize crime-inducing spaces and create a safe living environment where residents can feel secure."
