Cheongju City announced that it will install 30 LED signs at six districts designated as Safety Streets to ensure the safety of citizens at night. The LED signs serve as lighting devices when walking at night to improve the illumination and aesthetics of dark alleys. The street address indicated below has the effect of identifying the current location in case of an emergency. The signs were installed in areas heavily used by students and citizens at night: seven near Yongdam Elementary School and three near Ilshin Girls' High School (Sangdang-gu); six near Cheongju University and four near Uam Elementary School (Cheongwon-gu); six near Jungang Girls' High School and four near Baeti Park (Seowon-gu). The city established a public–private–police cooperation system to promote the project, and the Women-Friendly City Citizen Partners conducted seven monitoring visits to the candidate sites recommended by the police department to make the final decision. The city expects to complete the installation in September. While having a surveillance effect, the LED signs are expected to alleviate the psychological anxiety of nighttime passersby and enable them to respond quickly by knowing their current location in case of an emergency. A city official said, "As we are aware that recent incidents of violence against women have increased women's anxiety, we will work to create a safe city by carrying out various environmental improvement projects within the Safety Streets." Cheongju City enacted the "Ordinance on the Creation of Safety Streets in Cheongju" in July 2021 to ensure a safe environment for socially vulnerable groups, such as children, youths, and women. Since then, the city has promoted crime prevention initiatives, such as installing road studs in Safety Streets and expanding surveillance cameras and LED street lights. |
