Cheongju City announced on 24th that it will promote the revitalization and improvement of traditional markets by the end of the year.

Each market will attract customers through relay street performances, events, and performance and hands-on programs.

In addition, the markets will bring fun and vitality to customers through performances tailored for traditional markets in cooperation with local broadcasters and the local commercial district revitalization project "Show! Music Power" as part of promotional marketing.

▶ Exciting relay street performances

The relay street performances have been taking place once a month since April at Naesu Market, Bukbu Market, and Habokdae Market.

The performers showcased a variety of genres, including popular songs, fusion janggu performance, and fan dances, receiving an overwhelming response from both citizens and merchants.

A total of nine performances have been held so far, with a break in July and August during the heat wave. The relay street performances will resume in September.

The performances are scheduled at Bukbuk Market (Sep. 7, Oct. 5, and Nov. 2), Habokdae Market (Sep. 14, Oct. 12, and Nov. 9), and Naesu Market (Sep. 20, Oct. 20, and Nov. 15).

Cheongju City plans to add vitality to traditional markets where citizens and merchants can enjoy both fun and shopping along with monthly street performances.

▶ Various events

Led by the merchants' association, Cheongju City will promote a variety of promotions, events, and festivals tailored to the characteristics of each market to secure customers and increase sales.

In the second half of the year, the city plans to revitalize traditional markets through initiatives like sharing kimchi and helping the underprivileged, as well as hosting performances, flea markets, photo zones, and giveaways, at Yukgeori Market, Seomun Market, Bukbu Market, Bokdaegagyeong Market, and Seongan-gil Shopping Street.

Previously in May, busking, folk games, performances, and giveaways were held at Sachang Market, Gagyeong Terminal Market, and Wonmaru Market, which were well received by the public.

▶ "Show! Music Power," a local commercial district revitalization project

"Show! Music Power," a joint local commercial district revitalization project with local broadcasters, will take place at Yukgeori Market, Seomun Market, Gagyeong Terminal Market, and Seongan-gil Shopping Street between September and December.

The project aims to revitalize local commercial districts that have faced significant challenges due to a lack of customers. It focuses on contributing to the recovery of local commercial districts by attracting customers.

The performance will feature a number of popular singers and local merchant clubs, as well as introduce the attractions, foods, and unique shops of each traditional market.

It is expected that the beauty of the markets will connect the tradition from present to future and increase customers throughout the year.

A city official said, "We will continue to carry out revitalization measures through diverse channels to bolster the competitiveness of traditional markets. We will ensure safety and vitality in all our traditional markets where citizens can visit with confidence.

We will also make sure that the markets do not merely act as a place to buy and sell goods, but also a local cultural center with many things to see, eat, and enjoy."
