Title Cheongju Welcomes Second Group of Lao Seasonal Workers to Overcome Rural Labor Shortage
Writer Cheongju
Subject - Seasonal workers were introduced under the Cheongju-Laos MOU

The government of Cheongju announced on Aug. 10 that 23 seasonal workers from Laos have arrived in the city.

This marks the second arrival of seasonal workers from Laos following an agreement signed between Cheongju and Saysetha, Laos, in December last year.

The seasonal workers entered Korea through the “Seasonal Worker Program,” a system that allows foreign nationals to work legally, and were given preliminary training on crime prevention, desertion prevention and basic Korean language training before being assigned to farms.

They will be assigned to cucumber, zucchini and leek farms in the city and will contribute to the rural labor force for maximum five months.

The city has been promoting agreements to attract foreign seasonal workers to solve the problem of rising labor costs and rural labor shortages after COVID-19.

Starting with a Seasonal Worker MOU with the city of Saysetha, Laos, in December 2022, the city signed a second MOU with the city of Santa Rita, Philippines, in February.

“We expect that this will serve as a great help to farmers who are struggling with aging rural population and rising material and labor costs,” said a city official of Cheongju. He continued, “We will strive to successfully promote the Seasonal Worker Program through continued cooperation with Saysetha.”
