Subject - In the hopes of excavation and preservation of document heritages of Cheongju and spread of documentation culture -

In an attempt to discover and preserve as well as promote documentary heritages, Cheongju City and the Royal Asiatic Society (RAS) Korean Branch have agreed to work together.

Lee Beom-seog, the mayor of Cheongju, and Steven L. Shields, the president of the RAS Korean branch, signed an MOU on documentary heritages in Cheongju at a temporary city hall on Mar. 3.

The city government and the RAS Korean branch will work jointly to discover, collect and preserve Cheongju's documentary heritages. Both parties agreed to promote and develop heritage content and programs.

After the agreement ceremony, both shared memories of Cheongju as they enjoyed the pictures of Cheongju taken and donated by Shields last year.

"I hope my connection with Cheongju that began 50 years ago could continue by bearing fruit on the discovery of Cheongju's documentary heritages," said Shield. He added, "I will strive on to publicize the city of Cheongju through overseas communities and networks."

A Cheonju official said, "We would like to express our gratitude to the RAS Korean branch and the president for showing affection and interest toward Cheongju. We look forward to discovering and collecting documentary heritages of Cheongju by exchanging information on heritages under the agreement."

The RAS Korean branch is the world's first research institute on Korean Studies founded by western missionaries in 1900. It has been creating study fields on Korean history, society, and culture through academic programs, such as regular lectures and field trips exploring historic sites.

The branch also publishes its annual academic journal Transactions on Korean studies and it is widely used as a primary reference for scholars in the Western world.

President Shields first came to Cheongju as a missionary in 1970 and possesses many valuable materials of Cheongju.

He visits Cheongju from time to time, contributing to the academic journal and collecting relevant materials.

Shield donated 60 photos showing Cheongju's landscape taken in 1970s at an open exhibition hosted by the Cheongju Archives last year.
