On the 13th, Cheongju City announced that it is going to open a “Book Drive-Through Yulbong Smart Library,” the country’s first drive-through library that automatically recognizes license plates and allows the drivers and passengers to borrow and return books at the convenience of staying inside their car. The library will open on the 16th.
The Book Drive-Through Yulbong Smart Library not only recognizes the license plate of user and allows the user to borrow and return books at the convenience of staying inside the car, but also supports various services including interlibrary loan and return. This unmanned library will be open 24 hours, 365 days a year. Users can use the library services even at a late hour after work at the convenience of staying inside their car. Residents from densely populated areas that do not have public libraries can easily access the library services anytime they want. The drive-through library project was selected in the U-Library Construction Public Contest hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in November 2021, and has attracted a total of KRW 250 million including KRW 100 million national government funds and KRW 150 million city government funds. A city official said, “We expect that Book Drive-Through Smart Library will significantly improve public access to a library and convenience as it will stay open 24 hours and 365 days a year. We will work harder to increase the user satisfaction by providing more opportunities for the residents to read books and help them quench their thirst of book reading.” Meanwhile, the city also plans to build smart library in other areas that do not have public library such as the Technopolis area. |
