Writer cheongju
Subject Cheongju, the first designated cultural city in Korea, has become a city with a dedicated space for art education.

Cheongju and the Cheongju Cultural Industry Promotion Foundation (hereinafter the “Cheongju Cultural Foundation,” CEO Byun Kwang-seop) held “Opening Ceremony of Cheongju Dreaming Art Center” at Dongbu Warehouse Buildings 37 and 38 at 2 PM on Dec. 8.

Around 100 visitors including Mayor Lee Beom-seok, President Park Eun-sil of the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, Chairman Lee Wan-Bok of Cheongju City Council's Administrative & Cultural Committee, as well as local artists, related organizations, and citizens, attended the event.

Opening ceremony on this day was held to announce the full-scale operation of the art education dedicated space, which is part of an 'regenerating abandoned industrial facility to cultural space project'. The project included “Creative Arts Education Space” (Completed Oct. 2021) created in Dongbu Warehouse 38, and the “Cheongju Dreaming Art Site” (Completed Dec. 2022) created in Dongbu Warehouse 37 as part of the ‘Culture and Arts Education Exclusive Space Creation Project.’

“Cheongju Dreaming Art Center,” which was disclosed for the first time, features an art center allowing children and adults to imagine and experience art together. With artists representing various fields, it conducts research, experiments, and disseminates art education materials that incorporate non-verbal, creative, and playful elements.

The art center, with the size of about 1388 m2, features: ‘Indoor Playground’ (workplace), a flexible and integrated creative and activity space; ‘Circular Activity Room’ (workplace), a circular independent space for performance activities such as gestures, sound, media, and plays; and ‘Outdoor Playground (workplace)’ for playing, installation, carpentry, ecology, and more. The art center will conduct creative arts education with the operating philosophy of “Again, New, Together Art Education.”

The Cheongju Cultural Foundation said, “We are starting today, but the ‘Cheongju Dreaming Art Center’ has many things to enlighten on its own through more diversified considerations and various experiments in the future." The foundation also stated, “We will try to become the center letting artists dream again by exploring various relationships, arts education, planning ‘art time,’ and turning a space into an artwork.”

Cheongju Dreaming Art Center (37 Dongbu Warehouse) and Creative Arts Education Space (38 Dongbu Warehouse) will host exhibitions commemorating its opening, diverse forums, and workshops about culture and art until Dec. 10.

A retrospective exhibition retracing the records up until the opening of the Cheongju Dreaming Art Center can be found beginning on the day of opening until Dec. 10 from 11 AM to 5 PM. Creative works of 'Learning Artists' created by local artists and partners, 'Weekend Art Warehouse: Hand Workshop, Body Workshop’ will be shown.

'Suspicious Body Play_Sound of Leap, Tok Tok' and 'Culture and Arts Education Forum' will be held for families with young children on the 8th at 2 PM. Also, on Dec. 10 from 1 PM to 5 PM, the first-come, first-served art workshops 'Art Lounge' and 'Weekend Art Warehouse: Body Workplace' will be held for infants, children and families.

In addition, from Dec. 9 to 10, Dongbu Warehouse 6 dong holds an exhibition and a forum of best practices of culture and arts education groups hosted by the Chungbuk Cultural Foundation. And cultural arts education programs will celebrate Chungbuk Culture and Arts Education Policy and Festival Week. A total of three-day art education festival commemorating the opening of “Cheongju Dreaming Art Center” invites citizens for celebration.

A city official said, "With the opening of the Dreaming Art Center in Cheongju, a remodeling project for seven Dongbu warehouses began in 2014 has been completed.” He added, “Using Dongbu Warehouse as the basis, we will create a space where citizens can enjoy life culture that enriches their lives and provide an art education experience not found in any other city.”

Meanwhile, with the opening of “Cheongju Dreaming Art Center,” Cheongju and the Cheongju Cultural Foundation plan to transform the city into a cultural center and a center for cultural arts education by start operating art education programs such as 'Art Lounge', art education mediator training, and arts education expert network.
