Title 'Map of Things' to be Drawn in Cheongju Craft Biennale 2023 is Unveiled
Writer cheongju
Subject Finally, the Cheongju Craft Biennale 2023 was unveiled.

Cheongju and the Cheongju Craft Biennale Organizing Committee (organizing committee chaired by Mayor of Cheongju Lee Beom-seok, hereinafter the “Biennale Organizing Committee”) held a press conference at Dongbu Warehouse 38, Cheongju on Dec. 13th and revealed the outline of the Cheongju Craft Biennale 2023.

Kang Jae-young was appointed as Artistic Director of the Biennale in July and began creating a blueprint with the planning committee in August. The theme of the 13th Biennale in 2023 has been confirmed as “Map of Things – Craft, Connect, Create and Love the World.”

Director Kang said, “I intend to create another map of civilization by adopting the rightful attitude and ethical practice toward all living beings during the ongoing era of the pandemic and war, overcoming human selfishness encapsulated in humanism," and added, "The Cheongju Craft Biennale 2023 will demonstrate how crafts connect, create, and love the world.”

* A new ‘Map of Things’ drawn by mankind – Exhibition

The exhibition, which will embody the theme of the biennale, ”Map of Objects – Craft, Connect, Create and Love the World,” will be consisted of “Themed Exhibition” and “Special Exhibition.”

The “Themed Exhibition,” in which 80 artists from 20 countries will participate, is divided into three sections: crafts of love for life; digital crafts; upcycling crafts. The three sections will let us explore the future of craft equipped with ‘biophilia’ and ‘ecological correctness (a word named by Director Kang as a new value mankind should pursue). Hiroshi Suzuki (Japan), the grand prize winner of the 1st Cheongju International Craft Competition (1999) and a world-class craftsman who forges lively yet elegant lines; and Alexandra Kehayoglou (Argentina) who weaves the grace of nature with large tapestries will present the 'love for life' of crafting. Wim Delvoye (Belgium) who maximizes various cultural and aesthetic elements with unusual materials, and Studio ThusThat (Netherlands) which tells stories about materials through recycling designs of industrial wastes will explore the future of crafting as a new alternative to human labor, materials, technology, and community.

The 'Special Exhibition' will feature 'Craft Collection - Korea Vintage' by 1st-gen art director Lee Sang-chol, who is also editorial designer of the magazines 'Deep Rooted Tree' and 'Deep Spring Water.' The “Special Exhibition” shall offer a priceless opportunity to discover the value of crafting transcending time and finding out what crafting really is. Art Director Lee Sang-chol selected 200 pieces of collection to let us investigate the intrinsic value and essence of crafting by connecting craftsmen and users featuring on “usage” and “enjoyment.”

It is also worth watching the 'Cheongju International Craft Competition' that is being promoted at home and abroad, in conjunction with the announcement of its guidelines in June. The grand prize is KRW 60 million and is the highest prize in history. Jeong Da-hye, who won the grand prize with her work “Horsehair-Comb Pattern,” also won the grand prize at the 2022 Loewe Craft Awards, signaling Cheongju International Craft Competition's excellent eyes for recognizing talents. Craft experts of home and abroad are now laying their eyes on her to see if she turns out to be another global star artist.

An invitational national exhibition with Spain as the guest of honor brings 30 artists with Spanish crafts that were not highlighted due to renowned Antoni Gaudi and bullfighting, which are unfamiliar and mysterious. Especially, due to the inviting system, introduced in 2007, the Cheongju Craft Biennale is planning to operate an online exhibition hall in Spain during the biennale, expanding its horizons. Furthermore, the Invitational National Day will be expanded to Invitational National Week, with a special trip to enjoy the culture, food, and performances of Spain, the country of passion.

* Discussion by craftsmen, humanities; science; and cultural content experts from the globe – Academic

An international gathering of experts in craft, humanities, science, and cultural content will take place in Cheongju in the fall of 2023. The Biennale Organizing Committee explained that it has newly established and strengthened many academic programs because biennales have a role and responsibility in shaping global discourse. The committee is planning to hold diverse academic programs such as ‘Craft Summit’, which will be attended by international scholars in craft, humanities, science, and futurology; ‘Relay Craft Talk Concert’, a communication concert where artists, craft researchers, and cultural content experts participate; demonstrations and lectures on the production of works by domestic and foreign craftsmen; and ‘International Craft Workshop’ to showcase the convergence of crafts through matching craftsmen and curators. Furthermore, the committee collaborates with publishers to publish a book on academic discourse derived from craft discussion to promote the global expansion and popularization of discourse.

* Biennale, Connect, Create and Love with Citizens – Open Biennale

The biennale organizing committee will be holding a second biennale amid COVID-19 pandemic. The committee stated that safety will be the first priority, and this biennale will be open for citizens to connect, create and love, letting them enjoy a festival-like journey. The 'Children's Craft Playground' offers creative and sensual hands-on craft activities outside of school education with craftsmen and there will be an art market at the Cultural Factory's outdoor plaza where artisans and farmers await citizens. The Cheongju Crafts 2023 will also feature the most popular programs of the Biennale, including 'Citizen Docent,' 'Craft Research Institute & Craft School,' which will make Cheongju a craft city, as well as 'Smart Art Tour', a technologically advanced tour of the Biennale and Cheongju. For 45 days, the Biennale will let the citizens connect, create, and love.

* A new life for both craft and us - Public campaign “New Life Craft Challenge”

After revealing the specifics of next year's Biennale at a press conference, the organizing committee finally announced the launch of the national campaign, “New Life Craft Challenge.” This challenge is based on the slogan 'REUSE RENEW’. A campaign in which craftsmen in each field directly repair and mend precious crafts that have deteriorated over time, and giving a new life to objects that have been used up through craft techniques so they can continue to give life to us and to craftsmen. This project encapsulates the theme and identity of the biennale as well as the will to practice ESG. By operating branches of “New Life Craft” across the country and collaborating with international networks, the biennale's organizing committee is determined to expand the map of things.

Cheongju's Mayor Lee Beom-seok, the chairman of the organizing committee, said, "Cheongju Craft Biennale never stopped even during the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite the pandemic, it has become a reliable companion for the world's struggling craftspeople, healing the minds of both citizens of Cheongju and others worldwide.” He added, “With the help of achievements of the past 24 years, we look forward to the future of new craft with the Cheongju Craft Biennale 2023. The biennale will promote Cheongju as a fun city, and craft city not just in Korea but internationally.”

The Cheongju Craft Biennale 2023, which has finally been unveiled and started preparations for the event, will be held for 45 days from Sep. 1 to Oct. 15 next year, primarily in the Cheongju Culture Factory.
