Title Selection of 6 Sites as Targets of the 2023 Village Building Project
Writer Cheongju
Subject Cheongju announced on Oct. 6 that it selected six villages as the targets of the 2023 Village Building Project.
Villages selected for the project to be supported KRW 500 million over three years until 2025 are as follows: Woryong 1-ri, Miwon-myeon, Sangdang-gu; Sangya 2-ri, Gadeok-myeon; Dusan 2-ri, Namil-myeon; Dureung-ri, Ochang-eup; Bijung-ri, Naesu-eup; and Yonggye 2-ri, Bugi-myeon.

The Village Building Project is a bottom-up project that recruits residents’ ideas based on various properties and resources of a village. The recruitment was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, but starting in 2020, its operation was transferred to the city, which has been exclusively in charge of recruitment, screening, evaluation, and selection.

Starting in June, the city carried out the education for establishing a preliminary plan for each village and the consultation targeting 11 villages that applied for the project. The consulting service helped residents discover and plan their own projects and draw up a business plan with enhanced feasibility.

The meeting of the Screening Committee was held on Oct. 4, and the community leaders of villages announced the business plans drafted by residents. The Screening Committee made up of three experts participated in the screening and selected the final six villages as targets of the project through a fair evaluation.

The major projects are for the expansion of infrastructure and improvement of landscapes: rearrangement of abandoned spaces in rural areas, refurbishment of village centers, building multi-purpose squares, creating flower roads, installation of surveillance cameras, reinforcement of communities’ capability and more.

The city expects that the projects to expand infrastructure and improve landscapes will make the rural villages more livable and the project to reinforce communities’ capability will greatly contribute to enhancing the quality of life of residents by reinforcing community spirit among them and vitalizing their network.

The city has plans to establish the basic plans for six selected villages by 2023 and implement the project by 2025.

An official of Cheongju said, “We will continue to provide active support to make livable villages by supporting resident-driven development of villages through the Village Building Project.”

On the other hand, the city has carried out the Village Building Project from 2017 to this year as it invested KRW 15.5 billion to expand infrastructure for residents and improve local landscapes.
