Cheongju announced on Oct. 11 that it has selected the winners of the 2022 Beautiful Architecture of Cheongju Award.
A total of seven winners are as follows: grand prize: Gwangsun, an urban regeneration cultural complex for urban regeneration; excellence prize: Yangrim, a humanities archive; runner-ups: Gyeomhadang and Low-Roofed House; and honorable mentions: J Rich Building, Saejeokgul Neighborhood Park Eoullim Center, and Country House. Cheongju longlisted 12 candidates from Sep. 28 to Oct. 5, and shortlisted the final winners through screening by the Cheongju Architecture Committee. The grand prize winner Gwangsun, an urban regeneration complex, received a review that it livens up the urban landscape by refurbishing the space using the existing structure and shows the efforts to vitalize the old city. It was well received as it made convergence between the past and present elements by well combining the existing building and the newly applied material, designed for visitors to experience unique downtown space. An official of Cheongju said, “We are grateful for those who have contributed to the development of architectural culture of our city through excellent buildings. We will keep making efforts to improve the city’s urban landscape and promote outstanding architecture in the city.” The photos of the winners of the 2022 Beautiful Architecture of Cheongju will be exhibited during Chungcheongbuk-do Architecture Festival which takes place from Oct. 17 to Oct. 21 at the Chungbuk National University Gaesin Cultural Center. |
