Title Old Yeongundong filtration plant reshaped into a multi-purpose gym
Writer Cheongju
Subject The Yeongun National Sports Center opened on Jul. 6 after the opening ceremony, as it was built by Cheongju with the aim to promote leisure activities and sports for all.

The opening ceremony was attended by about 100 people including the Mayor of Cheongju City, Lee Beom-seok, Congressman Jeong Woo-taek, members of a provincial assembly, residents and relevant officials. The event consisted of congratulatory remarks, a ribbon cutting ceremony and a facility tour.

The Yeongun National Sports Center was selected as part of the national support project in 2017, after an investment of KRW 20 billion and it was built for two years, since 2020. It is a meaningful way to refurbish the Yeongun filtration plant, which was not in use anymore and reopen it for the citizens.

The Sports Center is equipped with a multi-purpose gym where citizens can play volleyball, badminton and table tennis, as well as swimming pool(seven 25m lanes) and shallow water pool (length 14m, width 6m, depth 90cm) so it is expected to contribute to improving the health of citizens and their leisure activities.

The Sports Center will be in pilot operation from Jul. 4-Jul. 15 and will officially open on Jul. 18, adjusted based on surveys that will be conducted during the pilot operation.

Besides the Yeongun Sports Center, Cheongju also plans to build additional sports centers in five regions, namely Gagyeong, Bokdae, Sannam, Osong and Ochang and spending KRW 80.8 billion for them by 2023.

“It is rewarding to transform the old and outdated filtration plant into a great sports center. The city will run the facility anyone can enjoy freely and make it the beloved center of Yeongun-dong,” said a city official.
