Title Apply for chemical control against exotic pests!
Writer Cheongju
Subject The Agricultural Technology Center allows farmers to apply for chemical pesticides at Farmer Counseling Office by Jul. 22, to effectively control exotic pests (ricania speculum, citrus flatid planthopper, spotted lanternfly).

Pests including ricania speculum, citrus flatid planthopper and spotted lanternfly harm fruit trees (apple, pear, peach, grape, etc.) in general and the size of the affected land increased to 626ha in 2017, from 117ha in 2014 when the pests were first introduced in Cheongju. This decreased to 295ha in 2022 thanks to continued control support and cooperation with farmers.

In general, exotic pests have one generation a year as they lay eggs on new branches and bark during winter. The eggs hatch mid to late May, then nymphs live about 70 days and adult pests live about three months. Given that, it is timely to control the exotic pests in late May, when the eggs hatch and around mid-August and late September when the pests lay eggs.

In the face of the upcoming spawning season, the Agricultural Technology Center has spent about KRW 50 million to support farmers who are expected to take a hit from damages incurred by exotic pests and in order to minimize the damage, by controlling pests in advance.

The application process for the pesticide consists of submitting an application form and one copy of any document that contains the recipient land's information, including farmland register, the registration certificate of the agricultural business, land register and certificate of farming land to the Farmer Counseling Office of the respective area. The requested pesticides will be supplied by early August, after being confirmed with the Council of Pest and Disease Control.

“As exotic pests are highly fatal to fruit trees, the quality of fruits may decline due to diseases, such as sooty mold and serious damages including dead branches. Therefore, it is most efficient to conduct pest control swiftly after setting the timeline for each town and full cooperation from the farmers is highly desirable,” said a city official.
