Cheongju Garosu Library, the 14th public library, opening on the 29th
Cheongju is accelerating the final preparations for the opening of Cheongju Garosu Library on the 29th. Cheongju Garosu Library is Cheongju’s 14th public library. It will be an informational, cultural, and lifelong education hub for the Gangseo and Gagyeong districts. ▶The 14th Public Library of Cheongju With an investment of KRW 13.3 billion, Cheongju built Garosu Library with one basement level and four above-ground levels (total floor area of 3666.72 m2). The construction started in June 2019 and was completed on Dec. 5 last year. The first floor is comprised of an information desk, and reference libraries for children and toddlers. The second floor features a Book Cafe, cultural classrooms, a community hall, and a performance hall. The third floor is home to the public reference library and musical “Healing Zone.” While rooms for club activities and office space are located on the fourth floor. This library houses a total of 30,957 books and pieces of data, such as 15,065 general books, 11,317 children’s books, 2,665 books in foreign languages and braille, and 1,910 pieces of musical data. ▶Differentiated and Integrated Space and Interior To increase efficiency of spatial use, this library was designed as an integrated and open space rather than building each reference library with their own space. As a result, it is being visited for inspection by a number of other libraries even prior to its opening. Specifically, each space has been finished with different colors and materials according to its characteristics to create an urban and sophisticated image. In the reference library for children on the first floor, bookshelves of various design elements are installed to stimulate the imagination and curiosity of children and also to attract their interest. The lines with free-flowing movement and rainbows of colors create the atmosphere of an amusement park. In the Book Cafe and Magazine Zone on the second floor, visitors can relax, reading magazines and newspapers over a cup of coffee. In the reference library on the third floor, open shelves of varying heights made of wood on steel frames form the “paths of books” against the walls, which gives visitors an illusion of walking on streets lined with bookshelves. ▶“Healing Zone,” a Reference Library for Musical Data Healing Zone is a reference library for musical data. It houses a total of 1,910 pieces of musical data, such as 967 books on music, 341 musical scores, 350 LPs, and 252 CDs, along with a stereo system and turntables for enjoying music. This is the only library in Cheongju where visitors can access LP data. As such, Garosu Library is expected to attract not only music lovers, but also other citizens wishing to enjoy this special experience. After the opening of the library, a variety of music-related reading culture programs and data curation activities will be held. Visitors who want to take a break from reading are recommended to pay a visit to Healing Zone located on the third floor to enjoy some music. ▶“Garosu Library Sneak Peak” Event The area around the library is filled with large-scale apartment complexes. However, it has been lacking in facilities to quench the residents’ thirst for culture. Because of this, the “Garosu Library Sneak Peak” event has received enthusiastic responses, with applications from over 400 citizens. The 80 selected citizens will be divided into groups of 20 to participate in the “Garosu Library Sneak Peak” event in the morning and afternoon on the 14th and 15th of this month. This event will be held in this order: facility introduction, free tour of the facility, membership card issuance, and comment writing about the tour of the facility. ▶Online - Offline Opening Ceremony in the COVID-19 Era The Garosu Library opening ceremony will start at 2 PM on the 29th. It will be held at the performance hall inside the library and streamed live through YouTube and Zoom. The ceremony will be held starting with the promotional video screening, conferment of appreciation plaques, and opening speeches, ending with congratulatory speeches. Following the opening ceremony, six reading culture events in four fields will be held in both face-to-face and contactless methods. In addition, “Talk to the Library” Garosu hash-tagging event, a mini Kalimba performance, hybrid book experience, and “Show Your Heart” Picture Book Pharmacy Program will be offered. “Garosu Library is a library with a differentiated spatial composition and interior that cannot be found in any other library,” said an official at the Cheongju City Government. “We will create the best cultural space in order to improve the quality of life for our citizens.” Inquiries: Garosu Library Team, Cheongju Osong Library (☎ +82-43-201-4232) |
