- Cheongju to extend the left-turn responsive signal system at intersections -

Cheongju will implement the left-turn image-responsive signal system in12 locations, where many vehicles go straight instead of making left turns, with a small number of pedestrians.
This system will initiate in February this year after its pilot operation this month in cooperation with the Chungbuk Police Agency.
The general traffic light is a periodic system that operates repeatedly according to the time and sequence of the signal, regardless of the presence or absence of passing vehicles.
On the other hand, the left turn-responsive signal system utilizes the image detection sensor installed in the left turn lane, which enables to give a left turn signal when there is a vehicle waiting for a left turn and a pedestrian crossing signal when a pedestrian presses the pedestrian signal button.

When there are no left-turning vehicles as well as pedestrians crossing the road, vehicles that goes straight gets priority. This saves time spent unnecessarily on waiting for the light and greatly improves the communication.

Cheogju has expanded the installation of left turn-responsive signal system to 12 intersections including 7 locations at the government-aided provincial road line 32 and 5 locations in the city center.
The left-turn-sensitive traffic lights installed at 7 locations between Gasan Samgeori and Namgye 2-ri Intersection in Munui-myeon, especially, is expected to be of great help in shortening travel time from Munui IC to Cheongnam University.
A city official said, “The current road conditions are limited and cannot deal with the growing traffic volume. We expect the left turn-responsive traffic light, a smart traffic signaling system, to reduce costs which have been caused by road congestion and increase economic efficiency by increasing the travel speed.”
