Cheongju-si is conducting Safe Speed 5030 Policy without a hitch.

The Safe Speed 5030 Policy is designed to protect pedestrians and reduce traffic accidents. This pan-national policy lowered the speed limit to 50km/h in urban general roads and to 30km/h in side roads in residential areas, etc. The policy took effect, following the amendment of the Road Traffic Act in April 2019.

The 5030 Policy commenced with basic and working design in 2019. Using a total of KRW 1 billion in budgets consisting of KRW 300 million from the national budget and KRW 700 million from municipal budgets, Cheongju-si replaced traffic signs and road sign facilities in 29 roads including Sajik-daero and 1st Circular Road this year.

Cheongju-si secured an additional KRW 500 million in national budget through a swift response. In October, Cheongju-si will install unmanned traffic enforcement facilities in association with the National Police Agency, and apply Safe Speed 5030 Policy to a wider range.

The first three months after the application of new speed limits (September through November) is the guidance period.

However, the roads in which the speed limit has been originally 50km are subject to speed enforcement.

The sections which have been in a test operation since May, 7.1-km roads from Naedeok Sageori to Bangseo Sageori and 5.7-km roads from Sangdang Sageori to Gangseo Sageori, are subject to speed enforcement starting this month.

An official at Cheongju-si said, “Safe Speed 5030 is a good opportunity to convert vehicle-centered traffic policy into a pedestrian-centered policy. Safe Speed 5030 was found to reduce serious injuries and deaths by approximately 20%, and it was also found that the policy didn’t have a great effect on traffic flow. We request the active participation of drivers.”
