Cheongju-si City Bus decides to partially retract reduced bus operation despite the loss that will be caused by COVID-19
- Agreement reached by city transportation company to recommence the operation of 21 buses -

Cheongju-si announced that it is going to reinstate the full operation schedule for 18 bus routes that were temporarily reduced due to COVID-19 to reduce citizens’ discomfort.
After suspending the operation of 113 out of 400 city buses on March 23 due to a deterioration in transportation balance and reduction in the number of passengers caused by the prolongation of COVID-19, the city resumed operation of 14 buses on April 7. However, the city continuously received complaints concerning increased inconvenience for commuters and the increased risk of infection due to the overcrowding of passengers.
As a result of the second revision, 14 bus routes including 50-1, 50-2, 105, 111, 115, 115-1, 502, 511, 713, 811-1, 811-2, 823, 831, and 832 will recommence, and four routes including 105-1, 611, 713-1, and 843 will be normalized. The reduced schedule will be maintained for 42 routes. Details of the changes can be found on “Cha Cha Cha Cheongju Transportation Administration Portal,” (https://parking.cheongju.go.kr/).
Cheongju-si subsidized KRW 1.45 billion as the first supplementary revision, and planned to offer support in the form of KRW 3.076 billion (50% province budget, 50% city budget) to the intra-city transportation company in the third revision. However, despite the recommencement of schools last May, the city transportation company is suffering from serious financial difficulties due to the decreased number of passengers, facing a whooping loss of KRW 2 billion.
A city representative said, “Despite the fact that the transportation company is suffering serious financial difficulties due to COVID-19, we have decided to partially retract the reduced bus operation in order to resolve citizens’ discomfort. Although the reduced bus operation has caused inconveniences in people’s lives, we would like to ask for your consideration since it is challenging for us to go back to the same schedule that was operated before COVID-19.”
