Cheongju-si temporarily expands eligibility for emergency welfare system
- In order to resolve the emergency situation posed by COVID-19, the city will temporarily expand eligibility by the end of July -

In order to resolve emergency situations faced by households suffering from the economic stagnation caused by COVID-19, Cheongju-si is temporarily expanding the eligibility for its emergency welfare system.
The emergency welfare system will be available for low-income households whose income is 75% or less of the median income due to unemployment, illness, unpaid leave, or significant decrease in income caused by COVID-19.
75% of the median income for different household sizes are KRW 1,317,896 for one-person households, KRW 2,243,985 for two-person households, KRW 2,902,933 for three-person households, KRW 3,561,881 for four-person households, and 4,220,828 for five-person households.
The expansion of eligibility for the emergency welfare system will be increased from KRW 118 million to KRW 160 million in assets and from KRW 8.08 million to KRW 9.75 million in financial assets based on a four-person household (tax exemption on living serve from 65% to 100%). Those who have already received support for the same reason within the last two years can also apply for the welfare program again after 3 months.
The cost of living of up to KRW 1.23 million (four-person households) and medical expenses of up to KRW 3 million will be made available to eligible applicants. Applications can be made in the administrative welfare centers in each eup, myeon, and dong or at the Citizen’s Welfare Department in gu offices.
The emergency welfare program identifies the status of income and assets of at-risk families who apply for the program through initial consultations and provide appropriate support for living, housing, and medical needs. As of June 2020, a total of KRW 1.222 billion was provided to 2065 households, an 23% increase from the previous year as the number of households in need has also increased due to COVID-19.
A city representative said, “We are going to promote the emergency welfare program as much as possible in various ways in order to prevent a situation where at-risk households cannot benefit from the program due to a lack of knowledge.”
