Writer Culture & Arts Division
Subject - Mr. Lee Jong-Guk developed
everyday craft products such as dishes and baskets out of algal bloom
- Content Korea Lab Chungbuk (CKLC), to support technical development and commercialization as No. 1 Idea product

Cheongju city revealed that CKLC held the '
Bright Chungbuk Idea Contest' and chose 'Algal Bloom Everyday Craft Product' as the No.1 Idea product, which was devised by Lee Jong-Guk who runs the
Mabuel Gallery near the lakeside of Daecheongho Lake. Algal bloom, which was known as a nuisance to the ecosystem was used as the material for excellent cultural products and everyday craft products.

Mr. Lee was very dedicated to developing cultural products using Hanji (Korean traditional handmade paper) that he made from growing the paper mulberry tree in
Beolat Village located at the edge of the nearby lakeside of Daecheongho Lake.

Algal bloom has a tendency to have higher viscosity than Hanji and doesn't need to go under a complicated process of growing the paper mulberry tree, steaming it with hisbiscus, stripping off the unnecessary parts, filtering them out, and drying them. Algal bloom is easily found at the shore of Daecheongho Lake every summertime and since the process is easy and simple, and all the more with its high viscosity, it was considered as a good candidate for commercialization.

Mr. Lee identified the abovementioned characteristics of algal bloom all past summer and set out to its product development. He made a plate cast, put the dredged up algal bloom in it, and lacquered it by beating it, which turned out to be an excellent product.

Consequently, CKLC has decided to begin a full-fledged development of everyday craft products and cultural products utilizing algal bloom. They are planning to differentiate the design through developing various kinds of everyday props and display products, while consulting with the experts. Also, they have decided to find out its various applications such as for fertilizer and fuel for fire in the winter. They figured that that if product development using algal bloom begins in full scale, the nuisance algal bloom will become cultural resources and contribute to the creation of jobs.

Mr. Lee Jong-Guk, the man behind this idea said, "the preconception that algal bloom is the culprit of environmental pollution made it difficult to solve the algal bloom problem, but we now need to seek a way out with various solutions for efficient use of the resources. And if it becomes more systematic with improvements in design and technology, it will come into the world as a superb resource."

Meanwhile, CKLC chose other ideas in addition to what Mr. Lee Jong-Guk had proposed as Ideas of Chungbuk, which are the development of Gamji (natural indigo-dyed paper) cultural product proposed by an Agricultural Corporation called Bangmaru Farming Association (Representative Lee Hee-young) and Mr. Seo Jin-gyu's board games using the tourist attractions of Chungbuk. Gamji, proposed by the Bangmaru Farming Association, refers to the natural indigo-dyed traditional Hanji paper and by developing Gamji as cultural products, they are expecting to hand down, improve, and globalize the Korean traditional paper. The board games devised by Mr. Seo Jin-gyu will be made into educational content through fun board games using the cultural heritage, tourism resources, and important figures of Chungbuk.

The CKLC is accepting new ideas using the cultural archetypes and resources of Chungbuk at all times. When handpicked as a Good Idea after its quarterly evaluation, they support the idea with creative aid fund worth KRW 2,000,000 and with its product development and marketing.
