The 2017 Cheongju Craft Biennale, which is held under the theme of ‘Hands+ embrace’, kicked off with the opening ceremony on the 13th, entering into its big run of 40 days.

The opening ceremony was held under the theme of 'Crafts, Opening the Future' at Sangsang Maru on the first floor of Cheongju High-tech Cultural Industrial Complex at 2 pm

The opening ceremony kicked off with a tribute song by the composer Younghi Pagh-Paan . The song ’ne ma-am’, which was composed especially for the 10th anniversary, is a musical piece inspired by a poem by the 16th century poet Songgang (pen name) Jeong Cheol and an interview with Kim Eun-hye, who participated in the special exhibition of 'Alain de Botton' in the Cheongju Craft Biennale in 2015.

After Cheongju Mayor and Chairperson of the Organizing Committee Lee Sung Hun declared the opening, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Do –Jongwhan , Governor Lee Si–jong of Chungcheongbuk-do, OH JAESAE , a member of the National Assembly the Chairwoman Yang-Hee Kim of the Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Council, and Chairman Hwang Yeongho of the Cheongju City Council gave congratulatory addresses.

In addition, major delegates such as Danish Ambassador Thomas Lehmann, Swiss Ambassador Dr. Linus von Castelmur, and British Council Director Korea Martin Fryer attended the ceremony. There were more than 1,000 participants including the delegation from Wuhan, China, a sister city of Cheongju-si, artists from 19 countries participating in the exhibitions, art experts, the curators of the Global Pavilion, domestic and foreign artists, art group members, and Cheongju citizens.

On that day, Minister Do Jongwhan said, "The Cheongju Craft Biennale is a melting pot of the past, present, and future of Korean crafts, walking the path of popularization and globalization by communicating with domestic and foreign artists." He added, "Crafts that inherit traditions are a great legacy of mankind that connects the past and the present. I hope that during the Biennale you will spend a precious and happy time feeling the value of beautiful crafts and traditional culture."

After the opening ceremony, guests and visitors went to the exhibitions together. Special performances were shown in the Global Pavilion on the third floor. The process of expanding the arts into music and performing arts was refreshingly presented in the form of a guide performance jointly organized by the co-directors Mansik Shin , Eunhe Ahn , and Youngju Jo . The four songwriters and six actors representing Korea performed songs, plays, mimes, traditional dances, contemporary dances, and calligraphy performances inspired by the works displayed in the exhibition points of each country in the Global Pavilion.

In particular, the German Hall played the ‘Contorted Wavelength' by Choi Myung-whun, a world-renowned composer. Composer Choi Myung-whun won the Ahn Eak Tai Composition Prize in 1999 and the Today’s Young Artist (Composer) Award from the Ministry of Culture & Tourism in 2008 and has attracted domestic and international attention. This piece was inspired by ‘Geometrically Folded Bowl, a work by Clemens Gerstenberger, a German Hall participant. Choi Myung-whun performed a song that combined sound (Jeongga, a type of Korean traditional song), Saenghwang, a traditional wind instrument, and a cello.

This was followed by other performances such those in the Finnish Hall - Mime (Cho Seong-jin), Singaporean Hall - Mime (Yang Kil-ho), British Hall - Traditional Dance (Kim Pyeong-ho), Japanese Hall - Violin Performance (Mansik Shin: Composition, Lee Marisol: Performance), Swiss Hall - Contemporary Dance (Gu Seo-yeong), Italian Hall – Calligraphy (Lee Dong-won), Mongolian Hall - Modern Dance (Ryu Myeong-ok), and Korean Hall - String Trio (Ryu Jae-jun: Composition, Baek Ju-yeong: Violin, Lee Hanna: Viola, Kim Min-ji: Cello).

In addition, Wu Jian'an, a participant for the special exhibition, displayed ’Cheongju, 500 Brush Strokes‘ in line with the opening ceremony. Wu Jian'an is a representative artist of the Chinese Hall at the Venice Biennale in 2017. He created a piece of work using a technique that continuously connects and cuts papers on which visitors drew lines with brushes. The works created through this performance will be exhibited in section 2 of the special exhibition.

The Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, Lee Sung Hun said, "Through this year's Biennale we made preparations to make crafts appear easier and more interesting to approach so that they no longer feel difficult and stale", and continued, saying, "It will be a place of festivities where the whole world is united with crafts."
