Chopsticks Festival, featuring the collaborative efforts of the Culture Cities of East Asia from Korea, China, and Japan, will be held for 10 days from November 10th to 19th in in the Old Cheongju Tobacco Manufacturing Warehouse.

This year marks the third iteration of the festival, and the ‘2017 Chopsticks Festival’ will feature chopsticks special exhibitions, chopsticks day events, and international life culture conferences.

From 2014 to 2017, the event has invited the Culture Cities of East Asia of Korea, China, and Japan. Japan’s NPO International Hashi Cultural Association and China’s Shanghai Chopsticks Culture Promotion Association will participate in this year’s event.

The special exhibition of chopsticks will take place on November 10th to November 19th, in a form of storytelling under the theme of 'Fragrance of Life' on the second floor of the Old Cheongju Tobacco Manufacturing Warehouse. Antiques and art products, including the history of the three countries of Korea, China, and Japan, the room of chopsticks master, and chopsticks and food culture, will be presented.

In particular, unlike previous exhibitions, which were centered on chopsticks, there will be exhibitions featuring chopsticks culture and living culture such as 'Spoon, 100 Artists', where 100 of the best spoon artists in Korea and abroad participate, and 'My House Heirloom Exhibition', where you can get a glimpse of the past and present of food culture.

In addition, there will be a chopsticks and table manners classroom that offers various programs such as making my own chopsticks, table manner education, and chopsticks rhythm experience.

The 'Chopsticks Day' event on November 11th will be attended by representatives and citizens of the Culture Cities of East Asia and various events such as chopsticks proficiency contest, East Asian chopsticks rhythm joint performance, chopsticks making experience, and Korea, China and Japan food experience will be held. The chopsticks proficiency contest will divided into preschool, elementary, general, group, and international divisions. A participant must pass the preliminary qualification in order to take part in the contest.

In addition, an international conference on the theme of 'East Asian Life Culture' will be held on November 10th.
This conference is an international conference with representatives of 12 Culture Cities of East Asia and chopsticks content groups. It is a forum to deliver expert opinions about ‘food culture and table manner education’ and for citizens to exchange various opinions under the theme of life culture of Korea, China, and Japan.

Lee Sung Hun, the Mayor of Cheongju-si, said, "Cheongju-si has been holding the chopsticks festival since it was selected as a Culture City of East Asia in 2015. The interest in the festival has been rising both inside and outside the country as the year progresses. In order to enhance the brand value of Cheongju-si, the city of life and culture, and develop sustainable cultural contents, we have established a chopstick research institute to develop cultural products and promote publishing business and overseas exchanges actively.”

"People's interest in Cheongju chopsticks is very high. Recently, at the Korea Administration Public-Relations Festa held at Ilsan KINTEX, Cheongju chopsticks attracted the greatest popularity. Through this festival, we will find the direction of Cheongju, the city of life and culture and Cheongju chopsticks and develop them as a global cultural resource."

Cheongju-si was selected as the Culture City of East Asia in Korea together with Qingdao in China and Niigata in Japan in 2015. As such, the city declared November 11th as chopstick day to specialize chopstick contents, which are common cultures of Korea, China, and Japan, as sustainable global cultural products. The city has been engaged in exhibitions, contests, and academic events, and is spurring globalization of chopstick contents.

After participating in the Nagoya Tabletop Show (NTS) last January, it held a special exhibition of chopsticks in Bangkok, Thailand in April and attracted a lot of popularity. On August 26, Deputy Mayor Lee Beom-seok introduced the successful cases of chopstick contents and globalization strategies at the Culture City of East Asia 2017, KYOTO and the three governments and culture cities promised their active participation and cooperation.
