Writer Early Printing Museum Operational Business Division
Subject - Temporary Closure to Last from August 21 to November 20, Modern Printing Exhibition Room and Metal Type Education Room to Remain in Operation –

Cheongju Early Printing Museum will be partially closed for 3 months, from August 21st (Mon.) to November 20th (Mon.), in order to carry out construction to partially revamp the permanent exhibition rooms.

During the temporary closure, the Modern Printing Exhibition Room and the Metal Type Education Room will remain in operation.

Cheongju Early Printing Museum seeks to revamp its exhibitions and content, which have remained unchanged since the museum first opened in 1992. The entirety of Exhibition Room 1, which is the main exhibition room, and parts of Exhibition Rooms 2 and 3 will be reorganized.

Exhibition Room 1 is scheduled to be composed of exhibitions revolving around ‘Jikji’, and various exhibition techniques will be applied to effectively portray Jiki, which was born from Korea’s metal type printing culture and Cheongju’s history culture, as well as the value of Jikji.

In particular, the museum will make full use of the content resources it secured from the Goryo Metal Type Restoration Project carried out from 2011 to 2015 to restructure the exhibition room into a hands-on visitor circulation path that can draw the interest of visitors instead of just relying on displays of relics.

Exhibition Rooms 2 and 3 will be feature renewed themes, turning the museum into one with much to see.

Furthermore, construction is taking place to transform the museum into one that possesses the artistry and aesthetic quality befitting the representative cultural facility of Cheongju-si. Such efforts include replacing the original circular concrete roof with a copperplate, improving its cultural symbolism as the place where the world’s greatest metal type print book was printed.

An official of Cheongju Early Printing Museum stated, “The new internal and external construction is striving not just to overhaul the museum’s external image but to help it be reborn as a museum with contents that will encourage visitors to keep returning to it”, and revealed, “We apologize for any minor inconveniences that citizens may feel and ask for their understanding. The Modern Printing Exhibition Room and Metal Type Education Room will remain in operation during the temporary closure.”
