Writer Welfare Policies Division, Welfare Policies Bureau
Subject - Increased Respect for War Veterans and Renewal of Deteriorated SajikChunghontap Memorial Tower -

Cheongju-si is promoting various projects to pay respect to the souls of war veterans who sacrificed their lives for their country and to instill patriotism in celebration of June, the memorial month.

▶Expanding Privileges of War Veterans through Increased Honorable Allowance
Cheongju-si increased the honorable allowance of the Vietnam War veterans from KRW 80,000 to KRW 100,000 through the revision of ordinances related to supporting war veterans of Cheongju-si and ordinances related to privileges and supports for the persons eligible for veteran’s compensation of Cheongj-si.
The city also increased the allowance for the bereaved families of soldiers who had died during the Korean War and the Vietnam War and policemen who devoted and sacrificed their lives for the protection and economic development of the country from KRW 80,000 to KRW 100,000.
For soldiers or policemen wounded in the course of performing their duties who are over 70 years old, KRW 50,000 of veteran privilege allowance is provided each month.

▶Renewal of SajikChunghontap Memorial Tower
Cheongju-si has fulfilled the long-cherished desires of the veteran’s organizations and families by rebuilding the old and deteriorated SajikChunghontap Memorial Tower, 62 years since it was built as a sacred place for paying respects to war veterans.
The city spent KRW 350 million to raise the height of the tower from 13m to 14m and replace the outer wall. The enshrinement room for keeping memorial tablets to honor the fallen soldiers whose bodies could not be found or had no connections was expanded from 20.64㎡ to 39.04㎡, and can now enshrine up to 4,000 tablets instead of the previous 3,428 tablets.
A wheelchair ramp was installed so that the disabled could visit and honor the memory of veterans more conveniently.
Additionally, 7 national flag poles were installed on the left and right sides of the tower to inspire a patriotic spirit in the families of the veterans as well as the citizens. Night lighting was also placed to make it easier to visit the tower at night.

▶Finding the Families of the Casualties of the Korean War
Cheongju-si is carrying out a project to gather DNA samples of bereaved families in order to confirm the identities of those who died during the Korean War.
This project is a part of the ‘Recovery of Korean War Veteran Remains’, a national project to excavate and move the remains of 130,000 veterans buried in fields and mountains after the Korean War to the National Cemetery.
If the families of the deceased veterans from the Korean War (up to a third cousin) visit the Cheongju-si Community Health Center’s Examination Room, the personnel of the community health center will take a DNA sample and make a request to the MND Agency for KIA Recovery and Identification (MAKRI). The agency will identify the remains and notify those who made the requests of the results.

“We are continuously promoting a variety of projects to pay express gratitude for those who sacrificed their lives for the country,” said the city personnel. “We will continue to strive to build th ‘best city Cheongju’ that never forgets the valuable sacrifice made for our country and people and keeps the spirit of patriotism.”
