Title Woojin Kim, an archery athlete on the team of Cheongju City, wins the gold medal at the Rio Olympics
Writer Division of Sports Promotion
Subject - With a gold medal in archery in eight years since the Beijing Olympics, Kim set a new world record of a total of 700 points in the ranking round.

Woojing Kim who is on Cheongju City’s archery team, won the gold medal at the Rio Olympics on August 7 after beating the Americans with a set score of 6-0(60-57, 58-57, 59-56).

His performance that brought him the gold medal was perfection. He didn’t yield a single set to the Netherlands during the quarter final, nor to Australia during the semi-final. Kim also showed that he could hold his strong in the ranking round the previous day, by shooting 700 points in 72 shots.

For Kim, the gold medal was meaningful all the more since it helped him get over the pain of four years ago. At the final national preliminaries for the London Olympics, Kim ranked fourth and was not able to represent Korea at London. This led to a slump in his athletic career, but he got over it and now achieved not only a gold medal in the group competition but also a world record. This is the first gold medal in the group competition for the Korean team (Woojin Kim, Bonchan Koo and Seungyun Lee) in eight years.

A representative of Cheongju City commented that “we are gratful to Kim for burnishing the City’s image by winning a gold medal at the Rio Olympics. We have high hopes for him at the individula round to be held on the 13th, too.”
