The City of Cheongju has started the research on distribution of breeding techniques and commercialization of useful inspects which will become the future agricultural growth engine.

The research and development division within the Agricultural Technology Center of Cheongju city has started breeding 7 types of useful insects such as super brown mealworm, Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis, Gryllus bimaculatus and beetles, etc.

The insects on earth exceed one million kinds and accounts for 3/4 of all animals on earth. In recent years, with the growing interest on the insect industry, it is emerging as the future growth industry.

Current domestic market size of insect industry is 150 billion won and it is expected to grow to more than 300 billion won in the future.

Not only for raw materials which depends on import but due to the increase in utilization in the field of experiential, pet, pest control, medicine, etc, and with the recent approval of brown mealworm larva as a food ingredient, it is expected to be utilized in the future food industry.

Therefore, the City of Cheongju plans to secure the breeding techniques of useful inspect used for experiential learning, medicine, functional foods, etc, in order to commercialize the useful insects based on this.

In addition, they are promoting the transfer of breeding techniques with Rural Development Administration in order to secure a variety of useful insects and concentrating on securing the government expenditure budget.

Officials at the Agricultural Technology Center have said "we are planning to secure a variety of useful insects such as butterflies besides the ones we already have in order to develop the breeding and commercialization techniques" and "we are planning to expand and distribute this as a new income industry for farmers.
